Ontario Mentorship Program

Program Goals:

The CWRA Ontario Branch Mentorship Program is intended to provide value to newer members of the CWRA, increase engagement in water management activities, and build long term connections among the members of CWRA. This mentorship program will allow the transfer of information among generations of professionals in water resources.

This mentorship program has been developed based on experience with prior CWRA mentorship programs, and advice from several other organizations' experience with their own mentorship program. We are grateful to the Grand River Conservation Authority and the Seattle Young Planner's Group for the examples, advice, and encouragement they provided. The Ontario mentorship program is affiliated with national CWRA mentorship activities.

Mentorship Program Structure:

The program session will run from October 2017-May 2018. This mentoring program emphasizes building connections among all participants through group meetings, peer mentoring groups, and individual mentor/mentee pairings as necessary. This program is generally mentee-lead, with the interests of the mentees driving the group meetings and mentoring pairings.

The tentative group meeting schedule is as follows:

First Meeting- Early October

  • Agenda
  • Speed Mentoring
  • Resume Review/Interview Questions

Second Meeting- Late November

  • Agenda
  • Speaker
  • Small Groups Discussion

Third Meeting- Late January

  • Agenda
  • Speaker

Fourth Meeting- March

  • Agenda TBD (World Water Day)

Fifth Meeting- Early May

  • Agenda
  • Speaker

Group meetings will be held at a location in Toronto that is accessible from the TTC and has parking nearby. Applicants in Ontario from outside of the GTA are encouraged- program leaders will work with them separately to find resources and contacts for their locations.

Program participants are encouraged to meet with peer mentors and professional mentors in between group meetings. Mentees are expected to take initiative in organizing peer mentoring meetings and in contacting their mentors. Program applicants should commit to attending group meetings to the best of their ability for the entire length of the session. All participants will be encouraged to attend CWRA and other water-related events.

After the final meeting, all participants will be surveyed about their experiences in the program and ideas for improvement will be reincorporated in the next mentoring session.  Participants from past programs will be encouraged to attend some group meetings, and program participants will be encouraged to participate in future programs.
